Title: "Supply Chain Modelling with Uncertainty"
"This thesis focuses on the modelling of supply chains under uncertainty. Supply chains consist of a network of companies for purchasing raw materials, transforming these materials into intermediate and finished products, and distributing the finished products to customers. Efficient and effective supply chain management involves addressing three fundamental questions: how to buy, how to make, and how to sell? These problems are highly influenced by various uncertain factors. This thesis explores three specific topics in the context of these problems in the presence of supply chain uncertainty. In particular, this thesis provides insight into whether or when competing manufacturers would prefer individual purchasing over joint purchasing. This purchasing decision is greatly influenced by uncertainty on market demand and rival’s product technology level. Linear information structure and two point distribution are used to capture these two types of uncertainty respectively. This thesis also developes an optimization based production planning tool that helps manufacturers minimize total costs while meeting sustainability goals. This tool enables manufacturers launch extensive scenario analysis to cope with various sources of uncertainty, such as uncertainty on production capacity, emission price, demand etc. Finally, this thesis shed light on the supplier’s optimal order fulfilment sequence given that buyers have different level of reliability in terms of forecast communication, where buyers’ future reliability is estimated based on the past forecast sharing performance which is assumed to follow the normal distribution."
