Tuition fee reductions

The “Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles” has introduced a progressive tuition fee system. For the 2026-2027 academic year, the applicable amounts are as follows:
 

→ Bursary rate: €0  

→ Modest-income rate: €374  

→ Intermediate rate: €835  

→ Full rate: €1,194
 

The “Direction des Allocations d'Etudes“ (DAE - Study Allowances Directorate) of the “Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles” is becoming the single point of contact for granting statutory tuition fee reductions. These are no longer processed by UCLouvain, contrary to past practice.
 

Any application for a bursary, modest-income or intermediate rate must:
 

→ be submitted to the “Direction des Allocations d'Etudes“ (DAE) of the “Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles”  

→ between 1 July and 31 October at the latest
 

As long as there is no response from the DAE, payment of the tuition fees is not due, provided that you have communicated your national register number to the Enrolment Office.
 

→ If the DAE awards a grant: your tuition fees are settled  

→ If the DAE awards a reduction: payment of the reduced tuition fees (deposit and balance) within the deadlines communicated by the Enrolment Office via the invoice  

→ If the DAE's response is negative: payment of the tuition fees (deposit and balance) within the deadlines communicated by the Enrolment Office via the invoice
 

Any complaint or appeal to the DAE does not exempt you from meeting the payment deadlines.
 

Our recommendation: start these steps early and pay particular attention to the deadlines, in order to avoid losing any entitlement to a tuition fee reduction.
 

The Student Support Service of course remains at your disposal to inform you, guide you through the process and answer your questions, within the areas it is now responsible for. 
 

If the “Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles” refuses to intervene, or if you are not eligible for its grants or tuition fee reductions, you can apply for a reduction at the social rate (UCLouvain) of €374 from the Student Support Service. Your application will be subject to an individual assessment of your social and financial situation.
 

Who can apply for the UCLouvain social rate?
 

This applies to:
 

Students who are Belgian and European Union nationals with an employment link in Belgium (student jobs not taken into account) according to the criteria laid down in European regulations (Directive 2004/38/EC on the right of residence) AND:   
 

→ not eligible for a grant or tuition fee reduction from the “Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles”. If in doubt about your eligibility, submit an application via the single application portal of the “Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles”.

OR

→ in an advanced master's (master de spécialisation) or in a second degree at the same level and not eligible for a grant or reduction from the “Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles”
 

The income scale used to determine whether you can benefit from the "social rate" at UCLouvain is exactly the same as the one used by the “Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles” for the "modest-income rate": the amounts are available on the "Conditions et montant" (conditions and amounts) page of the “Direction des Allocations d'Etudes” (DAE)..
 

For 2026-2027, these amounts are:
 

Maximum income, according to the number of dependants in the household, for students of "modest means" (tuition fees of €374):
 

→ 0 : €36,181.07 

→ 1 : €44,850.51 

→ 2 : €52,981.11 

→ 3 : €60,564.10 

→ 4 : €67,608.27 

→ 5 : €74,652.44 
 

For each additional person, add €7,044.17
