Georges Lemaître Chair 2023

Since its creation in 2016, the Georges Lemaître Chair has been awarded every year by the IRMP institute of UCLouvain to a world-leading personality in physics in the fields of fundamental interactions and cosmology. In 2023 the the recipient of the Georges Lemaitre Chair is Markus Ahlers.

Markus Ahlers, Assistant Professor at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark, is one of the leading authorities in cosmic ray and astrophysical neutrino theory and phenomenology. He also is at the forefront of the emerging field of multi-messenger astronomy.

Prof. Ahlers is currently member of the IceCube Collaboration, in which he has been occupying key positions. After obtaining his PhD in Physics from the University of Hamburg working at DESY, Prof. Ahlers pursued postdoctoral research at Oxford University, UK and Stony Brook University, USA. He then received the John Bahcall Fellowship for Neutrino Astronomy at University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA, a highly competitive five-year fellowship, before starting his own research group with a Villum Young Investigator grant in 2017.

Markus Ahlers is a figure in astroparticle physics, brilliantly mixing theoretical, phenomenological, and experimental aspects of the field, which he will give us the opportunity to dive into.
