Eduardo Cortina Gil is the new President of the IRMP

Professor Eduardo Cortina Gil, who was elected President of the Mathematics and Physics Research Institute in May, took up his new post on 1 September 2024

Eduardo Cortina Gil is a  physicist specialized in particle physics and flavor physics, with a substantial background in high-energy experiments and detector technology. He joined Université catholique de Louvain in 2007 as a professor and was promoted to professeur ordinaire in 2017.

He serves as the group leader for the UCLouvain team in the NA62 experiment at CERN, which investigates the rare kaon decay K+→π+νν to explore possible extensions to the Standard Model. His work on NA62 has been instrumental in advancing understanding of flavor physics and potentially revealing new physics, and he has supervised multiple Ph.D. students on NA62-related projects, including detector development and hidden-sector particle searches. His research interests also extend to muography, an innovative radiographic technique using cosmic rays, and the advancement of novel particle detectors.

Previously, he held positions at University of Valencia, where he made his PhD Thesis in the DELPHI experiment,  CERN, CIEMAT, and the University of Geneva, where he contributed to significant projects like the AMS-02 tracker for the International Space Station. Cortina Gil was actively involved in collaborative efforts, including the CALICE collaboration and Dark Energy Survey, focusing on high-precision detectors.

He serves on international advisory committees and organizes global conferences, contributing to the advancement of high-energy physics. Throughout his career, Cortina Gil has published extensively and holds a prominent position in the European particle physics research landscape, committed to both scientific innovation and education."
