Immigration and Fiscal Balance: Evidence from
Western European Countries
Hippolyte d'Albis, PSE
This paper evaluates the fiscal effect of international migration. It first proposes a theoretical framework that highlights the importance of both the demographic structure and the size of public education and pension systems. It then estimates a structural Vector Autoregressive model on a panel of 15 Western European countries over the period 1985-2015, in order to quantify the impact of immigration. Empirical results suggest that international migration had a positive impact on the economic and fiscal performance of Western European countries.
