Multiple cultures, universal rights
15 February 2024
In 2025, UCLouvain and KU Leuven will celebrate their 600th anniversary together.
On Thursday 15 February 2024, to mark the 600th anniversary of the founding of the University of Leuven (1425-2025), KU Leuven and UCLouvain jointly awarded honorary doctorates to
- Seyla Benhabib (Turkey/USA): political science and philosophy Professor
- Bernard Foccroulle (Belgium): musician and composer
- Theresa Kachindamoto (Malawi): Dedza District Paramount Chief
A philosopher committed to “the rights of others”, a musician who celebrates democracy, a traditional chieftain who devotes her life to women’s rights: these three individuals, who will soon be honoured by the two sister universities, invite us to think about and celebrate the diversity of cultures and the cosmopolitanism of rights through justice, culture and education, through reflection, art and action.
In 2025, joint honorary doctorates will be awarded at KU Leuven, in Leuven.
