The National Reference Center for Borrelia is part of the network of reference laboratories coordinated by Sciensano.
Its missions are to :
- To carry out the identification of species.
- Participate in national surveillance and organize data collection.
- Collaborate with national and European networks.

Zoonoses and vector-borne diseases: the epidemiological monitoring of zoonoses and vector-borne diseases in Belgium is based on data from three networks of microbiology laboratories (vigilance laboratories, reference laboratories and national reference centers), as well as on mandatory reporting data, when available. The surveillance allows to follow trends over time and to describe the characteristics of cases. In June 2015, the TiquesNet website (tiquesnet.sciensano.be) was launched, whose objective is to list the most at-risk areas for tick bites in Belgium, based on a registration of bites incurred by the exposed population. The results of the study are presented in the form of a map showing the number of notifications per municipality.
