AIDS national reference laboratory

The AIDS national reference laboratory is part of the AIDS Reference Laboratories coordinated by the Secretariat of the Belgian AIDS Reference Laboratories.

Its missions are defined by the Royal Decree of October 8, 1996, which set the criteria for the approval of reference laboratories for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome: 

  • Confirmation or exclusion of the presence of the human virus of acquired immunodeficiency;
  • Development, adaptation and application of techniques for monitoring and prognosis of the primary condition and intercurrent conditions, on or off treatment;
  • Evaluation and selective monitoring of the quality of diagnostic tests for acquired immunodeficiency, before or after their marketing.

The LRS also carries out the following missions:

  • Epidemiological surveillance of positive cases
  • Virological follow-up of HIV patients
  • Diagnosis of HIV infections in children
  • Molecular screening and follow-up testing for HIV-2 (viral load and resistance genotype)
