Prof. Hector Rodriguez-Villalobos is a microbiologist, Head of the Microbiology Department of the Cliniques Universitaires Saint-Luc (Université Catholique de Louvain) in Brussels. Doctor in Medicine, Surgery and Childbirth by the University of Alicante (Spain) in 1990. After obtaining the specialization in Microbiology and Clinical Parasitology in 1996 in Spain, he arrived in Belgium in 1998 with a research grant in the department of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases at the Jules Bordet Institute (ULB-Brussels). In Belgium he obtained his specialist diploma in Clinical Biology (Université Libre de Bruxelles), in human and veterinary mycology (Institute of Tropical Medicine of Avers) and completed the inter-university training in management of anti-infectious therapy; In 2001 he joined the team of Prof. Marc Struelens at the University Hospital Erasme (ULB) where he worked as assistant and head of clinic responsible for bacteriology, mycology and quality. In 2010 he joined the Cliniques Universitaires Saint Luc, and in 2015 he was awarded a PhD in Medical Sciences at UCLouvain after defending his thesis entitled "Emergence and dissemination of multi-resistant Gram-negative Enterobacteriaceae: lessons to be learned from local and national surveillance programs in Belgium". His main research topics include epidemiology of gram-negative infections, antibiotic resistance and the contribution of the laboratory in the rapid diagnosis of infections. Prof Rodriguez-Villalobos is co-author of 70 peer-review papers and is actively involved in the training of specialist assistants, medical students and laboratory technicians. He is a lecturer at the UCLouvain and a lecturer at the ULB Faculty of Medicine. He is also a member of the board of the Belgian Society of Clinical Biology, of the CUSL Antibiotic Management Team, and of the Hospital Medicine Working Group of the Belgian Antibiotic Policy Coordination Committee (BAPCOC).
